Bass & Guitar: My Endless battle between instruments?


Alright so i really wanted to learn an instrument and after research i chose bass. I fell in love with their looks and the low sounds, it was perfect for me! But when we went to Guitar center My dad didnt want me to have to buy a bass and an amp, he thought it was too much equipment if i ended up just giving it up. Plus it would cost over 200 dollars and my limit was 200. So i settles for an acoustice guitar. I like guitar fine but everytime i step into a music store i still find myself drawn to the basses. And now the opportunity presents itself that i may end up in a band when i get good enough. Plus four strings just seems like, while not easier, simpler. Since with guitar i sometimes strum the wrong string. I already have a few good books for guitar and dont have any money at the moment, but my birthday is coming up. I just dont know if i should stick with guitar or switch to bass, my first interest. Your advice would be appreciated!

I started out on guitar and by a twist of fate I found myself learning the double bass like a "big violin"with the bow and I started playing electric bass a few months after.

I played these becuase I wanted to be in the school bands string and jazz which i helped start. I had already played in jazz band for two years first chair, but I was a a new school and they didnt have. I had already played guitar for a fe w years.

after that year I went back to guitar.

Both the guitar and bass are great.

If you want to play bass go for it, but you can also play a little bit of guitar for the purposes of composing music.

The thing is that the bass in more of a mono toned instrument and the guitar and piano are more of poly in other word you can play chords on it.

The purpose of the bass is to keep time for the band, the bass and drums work together.

So my best advise to you is if you like bass go for it, in the mean time learn the guitar chords so you can write songs.
learn guitar scales etc, because it will all pay off when you switch to bass.

How come everyone wants to be Italian now a days?


It seems like everyone now a days is obsessed with being Italian or the life styles of Italians why? I mean my mom was full Italian with the last name of Piraino, and my dad was fully Irish with the last name of Grover so I'm half Italian, and half Irish, but I dont consider myself the full italian lifestyle or whatever you wanna call it, so how come everyones so obsessed?
some of you r saying you havent heard of it I mean like everyones getting spray tans now, wearing the italian flag getting tats of the italian flags i think jersey shore has alot to do with it and people act like if your not italian your not cool.

I know where you're coming from. Or the people who are italian are soooo proud of it like they earned it or something. It's so obnoxious. I'm sure its fuelled in part by the Jersey Shore obsession.

Ibanez RGA8 "E tuned" - 8 strings guitar

If a guitar is tuned to E flat, which strings are tuned to which notes?


I want to play Van Halen's eruption and I asked someone on youtube if only the 1st and 6th strings are tuned down to E flat but apparently not. He say which strings and notes though.

You would drop each string 1/2 step, so they would be tuned (low to high)

Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb

A lot of guitarists will tune down 1/2 step...usually to accomodate a vocalist.

Guitar.... It's an E-chord with a lifted e on the d string to leave the d-string open. Then adding a d with you picky on the b-string on the third fret. //// Atleast that's how I see it....

E major chord with an added minor 7th, or the common E7 chord (also referred to as the dominant 7th).

Why is G string is different than others strings in a guitar?


So I started to learn to play a guitar in school two days ago. I learned how to tune it, but why when tuning you press on the fourth fret of G string and all others on fifth? Also what are steps in a guitar? I mean I just started learning and don't understand a lot of things. The teacher talked something about one steps and G string in half step, like to go from E to A is one, but G to b is half. Could anyone help me in any way?

This sounds like the setup to a good punchline.

I think you're asking about why the G string is different than all the other strings when you try to tune a guitar to itself. In other words, when you play the low E string on the 5th fret, it will match the sound of the A string below it. The reason for this has to do with why certain strings are in fact chosen to be "standard tuning" on a guitar. The notes: E B G D A E are used as open strings because these are the notes that work with the most common keys of G, D, A, E, and C. In other words, all of these keys have many open string chords in them and don't use too many bar chords. Other keys like F# require difficult bar chords. So, "standard tuning" allows guitar to be useful in many keys right out of the box, without having to re-tune (or use a capo).

The second reason these notes were chosen for the strings has to do with their relationship to each other. You can look at it as relationships of 4ths or 5ths. The 5th of G is D, the fifth of D is A; the 5th of A is E, and the 5th of E is B. It breaks down here, because the 5th of B is F# (not G). So, the sequence of notes stops here. This is why the relationship from G to B is a half step off from the rest of them.

By the way, this relationship of notes is why 5 sting basses have a B as the low string (because it's the 5th of E).

I'm not really sure what your teacher meant by saying E to A is one step (since it isn't). A step is 2 half steps. A half step is the next letter in the musical alphabet, like A to A#. Or you could think of it as one fret to the next is a half step.

If you're a beginner, none of this stuff matters. This will help you understand guitar better, but it serves no use if you're just starting out, so spend more time on learning chords and strumming. My site will help you with all of the above! http://guitarmann.com
