Ernie Ball Guitar Strings What brand of guitar strings should I buy for electric guitar?
I am trying to decide what strings I should buy for my electric guitar. I want to get Ernie Ball strings, but not sure which one to go with, since their are quite a few names. I need strings that won't go out of tune easily and will last me a few months hopefully, since this will hopefully be the last strings I put on this guitar until I get my new guitar. What strings do you suggest?
If you're going for down tunings, then I'd suggest getting DR DDT strings. They're thicker, and when you drop them down, they pretty much never go out of tune. But if you're doing lighter, standard tunings, get Elixir. They last way longer than D'Addarios or Ernie Ball strings, because they have some magical coating thing.
Ernie Ball Slinky Guitar Strings Is it safe to put Ernie Ball Power Slinky(11-48) strings in my guitar?
I play an Epiphone Les Paul and have been using 10's for years. I've been playing a lot of drop tunes and every time I do they just sound bad, so I chose to upgrade to thicker strings. The guy at Guitar Center seemed hesitant when I said I'd put them in my Epiphone, he said it could warp my neck. I doubted this would be a problem, but I would like to know what people think on this matter.
Of course you can use those strings. If you use 11's in the same tuning/tension as 10's, your neck should pull forwards slightly over the next few weeks. This is adjusted by turning the truss rod. However, the truss rod needs to be turned normally for regular maintenance anyway. The only issue you MAY have is the strings not being able to sit in the nut, but it should be fine for .11's. Just keep an eye on your neck, or if your action keeps coming up, its time to get a setup.
I have a standard electric guitar, will these be appropriate or is 'Slinky' a term for strings that have a different sound etc?
It's just a trade name for Ernie Ball extra-lights (9's). But I'd go with their regular slinkys (10's) since you're a new player. You don;t want to start using extra-lights when you're first learning because it will hinder your development.
Ernie Ball Slinky Strings Is it harmful to my guitar to jump from 9 to 11 gauge strings?
I played my friends Ernie Ball power slinky strings and loved the sustain and heavy tone they produced. I want to put them on my guitar but im wondering if it would be better to jump from 9 to 10 to 11 as opposed to 9 to 11. Mostly worried about screwing up the neck. thanks
Not a problem at all. As long as you change and tune one string at a time you will keep even tension across the neck.
