Parker tremolo with heavier strings?
I just got a Parker PM24V guitar. It came set up with 9's but they were poor quality strings so I tried putting on a set of D'Addario half-round 10's that I had at home. The extra string tension pulled forward on the tremolo bridge pretty significantly so that it was impossible to set the intonation (saddles wouldn't slide back far enough to compensate).
Does anyone know if I would need to get heavier tremolo springs or something to compensate for the extra string tension of the 10's? For now I put the 9's back on it.
I've been playing guitar for ages but have never owned one with a tremolo. Any advice on keeping it in tune when using the tremolo too? Would locking tuners help with that? Again, this is my first guitar with a trem bridge.
A guitars tremolo system is a balancing act between the tension of the strings and the tension of the springs. By putting 10s on the guitar you have increased the tension exerted on the bridge. You must compensate for this change by increasing the spring tension. Although I have never actually set up a Parker guitar, I am quite confidant that it is the same as any other standard tremolo set up. Simply remove the rear rectangular cover and locate the "claw". This is where the loop end of the springs are attached. It will be on the neck end of the tremolo cavity. Use a phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws on either side of the claw two full turns (clockwise). This should be enough to offset the increased string tension. Adjust the screws as necessary to compensate for the heavier gauge strings. If you do not feel comfortable performing this procedure than take the guitar to your local music store and let them do it for you.
