New bass strings necessary?
I have a Ibanez RS800 bass I bought several months ago. I am a keyboard player venturing into bass. The bass is in very excellent condition with no wear to the fretboard. The strings look fine with no visual wear over the frets, and to my inexperienced bass hand they feel and play well.
Question then is do I NEED to change them as they are likely the original strings making them over 20 years old. Would changing them to, say, a set of Rotosound swing bass 66 strings make this bass a whole new animal??
BTW, piano for 40+ years and keyboards for 25.
If in doubt (about the age of the strings,) change them out!
I'm a fan of Elixir strings, myself, but pick whatever you like. Since you're just now venturing into bass guitar, you might do some experimenting over the next year or so before you discover a string you really like. With bass guitar, unfortunately, this is a much more expensive "experimental stage" than with a regular six-string guitar, but you'll eventually find one you like better than all others. Elixirs are it for me.
There's no telling whether it will make your Ibanez a "whole new animal," but I'd change the strings if you're not sure how old they are. I'd also think about possibly taking it to a luthier to check out the neck positioning and all the connections, switches and knobs to make sure they're working their best. Do those two things, and you will have a sweet little bass rig for yourself (and probably at a decent price, seeing as you got this old bass used!)
