Changes in the Pet Products Industry

As dogs continue to become a more integral part of families, dog products continue to evolve to address the full range of needs for our four legged family members and the desires of their owners. For example, medical insurance for your pet is becoming more and more accepted for mainstream dog owners while in years past the idea of spending thousands of dollars on medical procedures for pets was not common. Another area where there has been some really interesting development is in the area of dog toys. Once dog toys were more focused on simple entertainment for you and your dog, now they are becoming more advanced addressing not only the physical needs of our pets but also go deeper in addressing the mental needs as well.

While certain dog toys will remain timeless, the ball, the rope toy and various chew toys, new dog toys are constantly being developed for our four legged children. The Treatstik is a perfect example of an innovative and evolutionary toy in this current wave of products for dogs that seeks to address deeper needs.

It is a tough nylon treat dispensing toy that gives your dog hours of mentally stimulating fun as your dog rolls the toy and it randomly dispenses hidden treats. It stimulates your dog's mind, while relieving boredom and separation anxiety. Plus they get a chance to work for their food instead of it just being handed to them in a bowl. Treatstiks are perfect for those days that you leave your dog at home and can not afford to pay for a dog walker or bring your dog to daycare. They will spend a few hours eating their breakfast instead of gnawing on your furniture or shoes or...

It can be used to feed your dog as well. Instead of having your dog rapidly eat their food in a matter of seconds. My Kona would eat so fast we would often see her food seconds after she had gulped it down. The Treatstik forces your dog to eat slowly throughout a longer period of time. So if you have a dog that eats too fast, Treatstiks might be a good way to control your dog's eating habits.

Since your dog has to eat slowly the Treatstik may help controlling your dog’s weight. They are made from a heavy nylon material and can stand up to strong chewers. It has a large screw cap opening for easy filling and is dishwasher safe. It is made in America by a small family-owned company in Vermont

It comes in two sizes, small which is 6" long and is best for dogs 10 - 40 lbs. The small holds about a cup of food and the large which is 9" long and is best for dogs over 40 lbs. The large holds about a cup and half of dog food.

I have two dogs, Lucy a Great Dane and Kona a Chocolate Lab. They both love their Treatstiks and play with them whenever I give it to them. Kona likes her Treatstik a little more than Lucy, but Kona has a tremendous food drive like most labs. I am pretty sure I could feed her a whole bag of dog food and she would watch me very closely as I ate my dinner. She would weigh more than I do if I did not watch the food that she eats.

As dogs become more family members and less viewed as pets we will continue to see changes in the pet industry to address these issues.

What would come with a typical acoustic guitar setup?


A local guitar shop told me it would be $65 for a setup, plus strings. What would the $65 include? I mainly just want the action lowered because the strings are wayyy too high off the fretboard, would it cost a lot less if I just wanted this done?

You can't simply "lower the strings" without doing a setup.....string height is a by-product od a setup. In a typical setup, you should expect:

1. the neck relief to be adjusted
2. nut height checked/corrected
3. bridge saddle lowered or raised as necessary (raising it will require shimming or replacement)

Your string height and action is a direct function of all the above factors....so a setup is really the same thing as getting your action adjusted.

When you consider that you're getting a new set of strings and a fair chunk of labor, the price you've been quoted is reasonable.

Edit: Here are some average "Blue Book" prices: http://www.guitarrepairshop.com/blu.html Keep in mind that adjusting the bridge is more involved on an acoustic guitar. Since the bridge isn't adjustable like an electric guitar, the saddle must be removed and carefully filed from the bottom if it needs to be lowered. To get the height perfect, you may need to repeat this several times. By all means, shop around...just understand that the simple word "setup" can actually be time consuming.

Guitar and Bass Repair: Improving Tone, Action and Sustain Without Spending a Nickel Part Two

Part One of this article discussed how truss rods work and how to determine the neck relief of basses and guitars. Part Two of this article will go on to describe how to adjust truss rods to optimize neck relief and improve the playability and sound of basses and guitars. This article assumes that you have an understanding of how truss rods work and how to read an instrument's relief (refer to Part One of this article for a review of this material). It is recommended that you read Part Two of the article in its entirety before beginning adjustments on an instrument.

Guidelines for Rod Adjustment

Any time you are adjusting a truss rod be careful, go slow, and don't over tighten-never use excessive force when adjusting a truss rod! If you are the least bit hesitant or unsure about what you are doing, seek help from a professional luthier or repair technician. Repairing or replacing a broken truss rod is expensive and time-consuming, and in some cases it may be cheaper to buy a new instrument. Strictly following the guidelines below will help prevent damage to truss rods and improve their functionality.

 

  • Locate the adjustment nut of the truss rod. Some instruments' adjustment nuts can be found at the headstock just past the nut, either under a small cover (Fig. 1a) or exposed in a small groove (Fig. 1b). On other instruments, the adjustment nut will be at the neck's heel where it meets the body (Fig. 2a), or can be accessed under the soundhole in some acoustic guitars. (Fig. 2b).

     

  • Before turning the adjustment nut, mark it with a fine-tipped felt pen or marker to note where it started.

     

  • Use the exact size wrench/driver that fits the adjustment nut. Always loosen the adjustment nut slightly before tightening, as it may already be tightened as far as it can go.

     

    Note: If you have a bolt-on neck design instrument whose adjustment nut is concealed by the body, loosen the bolts and strings as little as possible to tilt the neck heel upwards and access the adjustment nut.

  • Take the nut off the rod (keep track of the number of turns it takes) and clean and lubricate the threads of both the rod and the nut using a drop or two of machine oil (3 in 1 oil works well). Avoid getting the lubricant on the finish or wood of the instrument. Put the nut back onto the rod and turn it to the mark using the same number of turns.

     

  • Keep the strings up to pitch when adjusting the rod (if you have a bolt-on design instrument with a concealed adjustment nut, refer to number 3 above).

     

  • When tightening, turn the adjustment nut only about 1/16-1/8 of a turn at a time, checking the neck's relief after each increment. If the nut seems to be as tight as it will go do not force it further.

     

  • Check the tuning of the instrument occasionally during adjustment, re-tuning as necessary. Tightening the rod should make the strings go slightly sharp and loosening the rod should make them slightly flat.

     

    Note: Some necks do not respond instantly to truss rod adjustments. The wood may take a little time to respond to the altered tension. If you made significant rod adjustments and do not see a change in relief, set the instrument aside for up to 24 hours then re-check.

    Optimizing Neck Relief

    The optimal neck profile for most guitars and basses is not dead flat. Strings vibrate in an elliptical shape, thus most guitars and basses benefit from a neck that has a very slight amount of relief, which will match the elliptical shape of the strings' vibrations. Read the relief of your instrument by fretting an outside string at the first and twelfth frets simultaneously. Generally, an optimized neck will have about a business cards' thickness worth of space between the string and the sixth/seventh frets. There are exceptions to this rule however; some instruments require more relief than described and some work perfectly with no relief at all (flat neck).

    If your instrument's neck has more than a business card's thickness worth of relief, you may need to tighten the truss rod. If the instrument develops fret buzz from this adjustment, loosen the rod back to its starting position; it may already be optimized. If your instrument's neck has less than a business card's thickness worth of relief, but does not have fret buzz, it may already be optimized. If your instrument has less relief than the business card's thickness and the frets do buzz, you may need to loosen the truss rod to optimize the relief. An optimized neck will have better tone, sustain and action and will be less prone to warping over time.

    While the business card method is a good standard for setting relief and improving the playability of most instruments, it does not take into account the unique characteristics of the individual instrument. The next Xylem article will cover how to fine-tune a truss rod and eliminate some fret buzzes using the truss rod. It will also present specific examples of how to correct upbowed, backbowed, flat and twisted necks by adjusting the truss rod.

    Basic Amp Set Up For Electric Guitar

    Setting Goals is Key to Learning How To Play Electric Guitar

    Every day people decide to take on new hobbies. One of those hobbies is learning how to play electric guitar. This can be a daunting task and not nearly as easy as people may think. It takes years of practice to achieve the kind of talent you hear from your favorite guitarist. Several hours a day can be consumed in the quest to be the next guitar hero.

    But, all that practice may be in vain if you go about it the wrong way. Too many times, an aspiring young guitarist gives up after just a short time. Either resigning themselves to a level they are never satisfied with or they quit altogether, never to play again. Usually because they become frustrated at their lack of development due to lack of instruction or lack of focus.

    Endless hours of finger exercises may be part of it, but it won't get you where you want to be on it's own. Strumming away aimlessly will definitely not improve your skills. Playing the same three or four songs over and over might impress your friends for a while, but will eventually become boring even to yourself. So, what is the key to this most noble of quests?

    Any good guitar teacher will tell you there is a sure fire way to keep yourself focused and constantly improving. That elusive secret that all new guitarists are looking for is simply, setting goals. Without goals, you have no idea what you are trying to achieve, much less how to get there. All the instruction in the world is no good without goals. It is like trying to use a map when you don't actually know what your destination is.

    The first goal you should set for yourself is a long term goal. Just how good do you want to be? Do you want to be the next Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai or Joe Satriani? Maybe you just want to be good enough to put together a band with your friends and have a good time. You may even just want to be good enough to play around and impress your friends with your new talent. That is ok too. But, it is crucial to set that long term goal for yourself so you can always evaluate where you are as compared to where you want to be.

    Intermediate goals would of course be next. What will it take to achieve that long term goal? How quickly do you want to achieve it? This will help to determine how often and how long you need to practice. It will also help to determine what type of practice and exercises you need to be focusing on.

    Last but not least, you should set short term goals for yourself. These can be daily or weekly goals. How long do you need to practice each day and what do you want to accomplish with that practice. These can be determined pretty easily based on the long term and intermediate goals you have set for youself.

    String Bass Prosteels

    GHS strings?


    Has anyone else had bad experiences with GHS bass or guitar strings? With every set I ever put on my bass the G and D strings have broken when I play slap. Are there any really strong brands out there? I've had some good runs with ProSteels, but anything else? Help a brutha out.

    I don't have any experience with GHS's. But I have LOTS with Di'addarios. They are ALWAYS SUPER CONSISTENT. I have never gotten a pack with a "bad" string.

    Also, perhaps think about adjusting your technique. I have played slap for over 14 years now. Actually, I slapped before I fingered.... (hey, no jokes!) But seriously, you can slap REALLY effectively without putting too much "pull" on the string that you "pop" with. It just comes with time and some finesse.

    I understand, man. I broke like 12 G strings in my first year alone. I've only busted 1 in the last two years, though. See what I mean?
