The major key is a good place to start. Using the sixth note in the chords would probably help this the most.
So the 1, the 4, the 6m, the 5... and sometimes the 3m are all good chords to start from.
In the key of C that's C F Am G, and sometimes Em.
C - F - Em - G might be an interesting progression.
C - F - Am - G is a classic. It's also the same progression as Bush's Glycerine, except that Bush did it in the key of F ( F C Dm Bb)
The 6m (sixth chord - in the major scale it's a minor chord) is a very emotional chord. It's a good chord to play with. The 3m isn't used as much, but if you can pull it off it sounds incredibly beautiful.
