If you're going to be playing dropped tunings, then you should consider thick strings in the .012-.013 range (Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky Strings are wonderful). This will allow you to tune down and still have tight strings that don't flap around. The thinner strings will generally be too slack when you're tuned down.
Guitar strings are the core and soul of any guitar. Without them, there would be no possible way to produce sound. To obtain the leading sound out of your guitar, you should alter your strings on a traditional basis. This is an easy way to experiment and try out different gauges to see what tone fits your design.
